The Wikipedia rabbit hole is leaking into real life after users discovered a feature on the site’s mobile app that shows articles written about nearby locations.
We’ve all found ourselves clicking through Wikipedia articles longer than we expected; now, users are taking their online browsing into the real world thanks to a newly-discovered feature on the app.
Yes, Wikipedia has its own mobile app, which comes with a special tool that allows users to see articles written about locations near them.
It’s called the ‘Places’ tab, and it uses a device’s current location to scout nearby spots that have articles written about them.

This feature was discovered by X user Neil Agarwal in April 2026 and subsequently went viral, leaving viewers stunned that Wikipedia has an app, nevermind such an interesting tool to discover historically relevant spots in their area.
“I accidentally discovered one of the coolest features on the internet,” he wrote. “I opened it and instantly fell into a rabbit hole of random places, local history, and weird things around me.”

This isn’t the only nifty feature the Wikipedia app has to offer; it also has an ‘On This Day’ tab, which brings up articles about historical events that took place on the specific day you’re using the app.
This might come as a shock to some, but the Wikipedia app for iOS has actually been around since 2009. An Android version of the app was published in 2012, and mobile-friendly web browsers for the site have existed as early as 2007.
